founded in 2017
We started with a tiny budget and a big sense of urgency and curiosity. In 2014, the onset of war in Europe propelled us towards new dimensions of storytelling.
In 2017 we founded studio zzzap.
Our first production embodied the grief
that followed with the downing of MH17 and the lifes lost in Ukraine, due to the violent invasion by Russia and the ongoing war.
Ukraines defense is vital to Europe.

The stories we tell
We cherish the moments where technology and human experience don't quite line up — where the seams show, where the algorithm meets the grief, where a headset places you somewhere you could never otherwise stand. Those gaps are where we work. To encounter yourself.

Lady Lazarus places you inside the apartment where Willemiek's friend decided to end her life. With every room you explore, you hear her friends' voices. Your unique route through her home leads you to the inevitable question: why? But with every step you take, parts of the apartment begin to disappear. Can a coherent story ever be found after sudden loss?

Studio zzzap part of 2 year R&D program
15/01/2026 ——- We are happy to announce that together with Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, Studio Nergens, Nullshima Studio, Richard Vijgen, NFF and Art academy HKU we will be researching embodied XR and archiving/versioning practices.
The consortium is titled HEFT (Heritage for the Future). This is supported by the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie, as part of the Creative Industries Immersive Impact Coalition (CIIIC).
With the support of the grant Studio ZZZAP will focus on two technical immersive R&D trajectories. The first to be an exploration of hybrid theater & vr for Rapa Nui Revisited. A theatrical VR experience about the world economy and it’s inception in kolonialism and the extraction of heritage. A unique blen where heritage meets tourism, community resilience and nostalgia. Rapa Nui Revisited is embedded in the transformation of the Rapa Nui community marked by a colonial past, into a thriving self-ruled society.
The project will developed with Abel Enklaar and Nienke Huitenga Broeren
